Traces is a project by photographer Natalie Tkachuk that features images of old notebooks, letters, and books. Natalie says

These are images of old letters and books which were collected from house clearances and explore concepts of the lost and the forgotten, what a stranger leaves behind, traces of time, memory, and presence.

The letters and books are what is left behind from a stranger's life. The power lies in what is not revealed, allowing the viewer to use their own experiences to relate to them. These letters and books are objects that are familiar and recognizable to us all and allow us to use our own memories and our own identity to relate to the work.

These once private objects have now become public and the only reason for this is the death of the owners; they are now a memorial to the lost and forgotten.

These spare, delicate, and mysterious images are like individual memories: shrouded in darkness, waiting to be opened and explored.
