We are pleased to present The Academy by photographer Ryan Kellman. Ryan explains this project in the context of his work:

In my work I look to the landscape as an immediate and important part of culture. I understand our relationship with the landscape to be a reciprocal one, we affect it and it in turn affects us. It is a scene of drama containing our history, our culture, and all the apparent contradictions inherent to society.

The images in this body of work were taken during the destruction of the Academy of Science in San Francisco's Golden Gate Park. Traditionally, museums are recognized as a place for people to learn about history and science in an objective light. As nature begins to reclaim the formally majestic halls and dioramas of the museum, a new understanding of the history the museum portrays begins to be revealed, its exposed state serving to uncover the artifice and subjectivity inherent in the museum's creation.
