Conventions is a selection of images by photographer Jackie Alpers that explore the strange world of porn conventions. While these images portray the exhibitionism and carnival-like atmosphere that one would expect from such an event, they are almost non-sexual; the images illustrate that in many ways, the porn industry truly is just another industry. Jackie's technique -- at times grainy, shadowy, and garish -- suits the subject matter perfectly. Jackie says of the project:
I have always been interested in the shadow side of humanity. I’ve grown to believe that it exists in equal parts to the lighter side in all of us. Most of us teeter between the two on a daily basis, striving for balance in our lives. People in the porn industry are very aware of this delicate balance. They prosper from hang-ups and fetishes, flourishing in the shadows of our society. Most porn stars and products never become household names though they are actually seen in more households than Mr. Clean.
