Air Conditioners of Philadelphia is a series of images taken by Bruce Grant, who writes:
When I was just a beginner, I studied with unbelievable intensity to learn everything I could about photography. Over thirty years later, I can see that one of the most crucial things I learned to do was to think clearly and critically about photography. It helped me immeasurably to grow as a teacher and as an artist...up to a point. What I learned only much later was how, not to think, but to feel. Photography to me today is an almost completely visceral process. Something pre-verbal, almost pre-visual, starts me tingling. I study it. Stalk it. Frame it. And when it feels right, shoot it. Flux into order. A way, as Peter Schjeldahl said of the Fauves, not so much of seeing the world as of feeling it with the eyes. I work primarily in projects - some self-contained, others continuing to engage me over years. Air Conditioners is among the longest running of these projects.
